Fiscal sponsorship is a common alternative to creating a new nonprofit.

Fiscal Sponsorship is an arrangement between an existing 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a project, program, or even another nonprofit. The sponsor extends its tax-exempt status to the project so it can receive food, funding, or support from a foundation, government agency, or tax-deductible source.

Washington Food Coalition and the WSDA have partnered to create Fiscal Sponsorship for Food Organizations to help you understand how it works and how to set up a sponsorship. These easy-to-understand videos and written materials explain how sponsorships work in the state of Washington and provide sample agreements and templates to help you get started.

There are two ways to access "Fiscal Sponsorship for Food Organizations."

  1. Here on the WFC page, scroll down to watch any of the four videos and download the materials you need to get started.

  2. On the Nonprofit Learning Center platform, you can go through the materials in sequence as a course, earning a certificate of completion at the end. Enrollment in the course is free. Sponsoring organizations can use the certificate to help screen potential applicants.
